Perfect for diaper bag

This book is perfect for the diaper bag! It's small, and my 13-month old can enjoy it whether or not anyone is available to read it to her. It has kept her entertained through many restaurant mealtimes and car rides. You'll be amazed how many words your child knows when you ask her to point to specific pictures throughout the book!

Simple books are the best

"First 100 Words" by Roger Priddy was bought as a gift for my sons’s first birthday and it is the perfect book for a one year old. It is quite a basic book and the sort of board book most children will have at some stage in their life. It definitely deserves mention, as my son chooses it from his library nearly every day.

Previous reviews have indicated some confusion over the book size. This version of the book is pretty small (it's 5 x 6 inches; an over-sized ABC/colors version can be found here), and it can withstand rough little hands as it is a board book.

Each brightly colored page shows various photographs alongside the corresponding word. I like that it uses photographs instead of illustrations (animals wearing clothes, etc.). The pages are split into themes of things your LO will probably recognize from everyday life, such as clothes, food, things that go and so on.

My son has had this book for a couple of months now and it’s been a huge hit with him. He will sit on the floor and look through it himself. Together, we look at the pages and I point to each picture and say the word. I’ve started him with some Tiny Tutor videos to supplement our lessons while I do chores around the house. We do this most days and the repetition seems to be paying off, as he seems to recognize a new thing in the book every day.

Although rather basic on the face of it, I am really delighted with this book and wish we’d had it sooner. It is selling for under $5 on Amazon which I think is a real bargain. I’ve noticed there are some similar titles, such as First 100 Animals and First 100 Numbers Colors Shapes. I will be looking to purchase these in the future too. It seems the simple things really are the best sometimes.

Best book for toddlers at every learning stage!

Bought this book for my 1 year old as she began to show an interest in looking at books herself. It is her favorite! Not only is the outside cover soft, but the pages inside are study boards. The book itself is small, perfect size for a toddler with small hands. She can carry it around and turn each page on her own. Every two pages has a theme, such as "Outside" or "Bath" or "Toys", every word has its own colorful square and photo. This is a great tool for a young toddler who is beginning to learn how to say the names of everyday objects or activities. My daughter and I will sit down and I will point to each object and say the word, she will try and repeat the sound. Sometimes I will say "show me where the cat is" or "can you point to the airplane" and she loves finding the objects on the page! I loved this book so much we bought the "first 100 animals" also. Worth every penny and more!

Disappointing

It is a shame that I didn't read the reviews for this book before buying it. Yes, it covers the basics of using a sock knitting machine, and as such, the information is useful. However, it's usefulness is limited by a) awful grammar and style of writing and b) a lack of depth to the actual material. I've had a couple of problems with my machine and the advice is both limited but also difficult to follow due to the style of language. Writing a book is very different from teaching a class and there is no doubt that the book would benefit from a good editor and additional information. The section on doing a heel was very confusing and often inaccurate.

I am sorry to be so negative because there is certainly a need for a contemporary manual on sock knitting machines, and I had hoped this would be it. Perhaps I wouldn't feel so negative if it hadn't been so expensive. As it stands it is simply not worth the money.

For Newbies

This book really is a "101" course. It is very basic and not for anyone with experience with one of these wonderful old machines. I was a complete novice and by following the very clear directions one step at a time I made a tube with my sock machine the very first time I tried. I highly recommend this book to anyone just starting out with a CSM especially if there is no one nearby to help with instruction.

Very informative, but needed an English teacher's edit

I purchased this book because I had recently bought an antique Gearhart sock knitting machine. It was recommended to me by my daughter who has a Legare sock knitting machine and also owns this book. The information covers the major brands of antique machines and is very good. If you can get past the fact that the author really needed to have the text reviewed and corrected by someone who has, at least, a basic working knowledge of punctuation, captalization, and sentence formation, you will find the book full of helpful information in getting started cleaning and using your "new" old machine. Because of the lack of punctuation, I highly recommend reading it through once, and adding a few commas, etc., in order to make the information more understandable.

Good information was provided on making heels and toes, hanging a hem, a set up bonnet, and a basic sock. That's all, no other patterns. Nothing was included on the use of a ribber. One half of the book is dedicated to cleaning and setting up and the general operation of the machine. The pictures, and there are lots of them, are very helpful. I will continue to use this book as a reference guide, because it contains basic, reliable information.

I wish I had purchased this book BEFORE I bought my machine. I would have had a much better grasp on what to look for, and how the machine should work, before spending the large amount of money that these machines are currently selling for.
