"Sideways 3 Chile" finds our main protagonist Miles Raymond (Paul Giamatti in the original film) running out of money, but still surviving on the fumes of a past, but fleeting, fame. When he is offered an opportunity by a reputable magazine to write an article about the diverse wine regions of the country of Chile he jumps at the chance.
At the end of "Vertical," Miles had fallen in love with a Spanish girl, Laura, and he asks her to fly from Spain to accompany him.
Miles, in full panic anxiety mode, which is endemic to his character, flies to Chile to meet Laura and discover this beautiful and vast country. Complications, heartbreak, and romance ensue.
In the great and desolate Atacama Desert in the north of Chile Miles comes face to face with himself.

... Pickett's second sequel to Sideways just may be his best book yet
By Amazon Customer
Rex Pickett's second sequel to Sideways just may be his best book yet: packed with philosophical musings, yet never lacking in the hilarious set piece department (I will not give them away!). Miles Raymond is -- as usual -- terrified of being alone, and -- as usual -- drowns his panic in wine, women, and Xanax. Offered a trip to explore Chile's protean wine regions, he embarks on an adventure that makes the one in Sideways look tame. Several mishaps, a few oxen, earthquakes, couplings, and one Fiat 500 later, Miles comes to the realization that things don't constitute happiness: it's love, particularly with the person who most understands you. For all the Miles/Maya fans out there (of which I am surely President) this book is both a sweet gift and a dream come true. And Jack is back! It's also beautifully written, with an ear for the depth of language we're seldom privy to nowadays. All in all: an incredibly honest, authentic peek into the soul of one of our best American writers.

Chronicle of a self-absorbed literary snob and wine bore
By David Read
This is Rex Pickett's second sequel to his smash success "Sideways," on which the movie was based. These novels appear to be semi-autobiographical, and chronicle Pickett's own adventures as a writer of novels and screenplays, and as a wine connoisseur. This third installment is generally well written, but there is a little too much showy writing, with obscure words of French or Latin origin, like "corruscated," being used not just once but multiple times.
The writing is occasionally annoying, but the protagonist's (and, one assumes, the author's) astonishing selfishness, self-absorption, and spiritual poverty is constantly annoying. So you can't seem to find meaning in life when you have no family and no religion? Really? Whodathunkit? And his resentment at Hollywood is uncalled for. Apparently he didn't personally make all the money that was made on the motion picture "Shameless" (Sideways), and strongly believes that he should have. He is utterly and completely ungrateful for all the easy gigs (not to mention the easy women) that fall into his lap as a result of the fame conferred upon him by the filmmakers and actors who made a great movie out of his book. Two such jobs are described in the book; a 24-hour trip to Southern California wine country that grosses him $5,000, and a month-long all-expenses-paid sojourn in Chile, for which he is paid handsomely and has minimal obligations in terms of publicity appearances. He enormously resents the publicity interviews that he gives, cuts them short, and when a car provided for him is not to his liking, he runs it off a cliff. What a prince of a human being -- not! This self-absorbed emotional cripple has done far better in life than he deserved, and he ought to learn some gratefulness for the all the many good things that have come his way.

Sideways 3 Chile makes me want more...
By bunctious
I enjoyed reading Sideways 3 Chile it was fun to see how a somewhat matured Miles and Jack navigated their uproarious adventure through Chile. But what was so enjoyable and so customary for a Rex Pickett novel was his description of Chile and the places and things he saw there. It makes me want to travel to the region. I hope for a Sideways 4 but honestly I think I would enjoy anything written by Rex. He has it. He writes page turners; he writes books that one just can't put down and Chile is that in a nutshell. Funny as heck and if you're a fan of Sideways you will love Chile. Five stars!
Thanks Rex!
