About the Author
Patricia B. Ebrey is Professor with Joint Appointment: Early Imperial China, Song Dynasty at the University of Washington in Seattle. In addition to THE CAMBRIDGE ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF CHINA (Cambridge University Press, 1996), she has published numerous journal articles. Her monographs include THE INNER QUARTERS: MARRIAGE AND THE LIVES OF CHINESE WOMEN IN THE SUNG PERIOD (University of California Press, 1993) and CONFUCIANISM AND FAMILY RITUALS IN IMPERIAL CHINA: A SOCIAL HISTORY OF WRITING ABOUT RITES (Princeton University Press, 1991). She is also author of CHINA: A CULTURAL, SOCIAL, AND POLITICAL HISTORY (Houghton Mifflin, 2006). She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1975.

Anne Walthall is Professor of Japanese History at the University of California, Irvine. She has published numerous journal articles in English, French, and Japanese. Her monographs include SOCIAL PROTEST AND POPULAR CULTURE IN EIGHTEENTH CENTURY JAPAN (Association for Asian Studies, 1986), PEASANT UPRISINGS IN JAPAN: A CRITICAL ANTHOLOGY OF PEASANT HISTORIES (University of Chicago Press, 1991), and THE WEAK BODY OF A USELESS WOMAN: MATSUO TASEKO AND THE MEIJI RESTORATION (University of Chicago Press, 1998). Great for class. I didn't mind the highlighter marks in the book since it helped me study! The books content is a bit overwhelming for non-history majors. According to my professor however, this book does a good job explaining and elaborating the content that was collected for the period ranges of East Asia. Good buy and satisfied. Thanks!

About the Author
Adam Briggle is Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion Studies at the University of North Texas. He is the author of A Rich Bioethics: Public Policy, Biotechnology, and the Kass Council (2010).

Carl Mitcham is a philosopher of science and technology in the Division of Liberal Arts and International Studies at Colorado School of Mines (CSM). He is the author of several books including Thinking through Technology (1994) and co-author of Humanitarian Engineering (with David Muñoz, 2010). Mitcham is co-editor (with Stephen Cutcliffe) of Visions of STS: Counterpoints in Science, Technology and Society Studies (2001) and editor of the four-volume Encyclopedia of Science, Technology, and Ethics (2005).

Chemist teaching ethics

I wanted to teach a unit on scientific ethics in a freshman (undergraduate) seminar, but I had no idea where to start.

I liked this book, AFTER I got passed the first couple chapters on theory. The theory was completely foreign to me (as a beginner) and almost scared me off. However, the bulk of this text gives case studies with useful discussion that was very accessible to myself and my students.

After I got through the 'assigned readings' I found myself wanting to read more, even though it didn't fit the course I was teaching. It was good for my growth as a scientist and educator.

It's an okay. Hope for a better edition.

Honestly, I don't like to review any book at their first edition because there are so many things they missed and/or need to improve.

The book covers most of the topics in both dynamics and vibration, you might find that they are well-divided within the book itself. The theoretical content was great; however, the sample and problem content were poor. If you didn't do well in the first course of dynamics, you might find yourself struggling with this book. I'd recommend you learn the dynamics part from Hibbeler's Mechanics of Materials, and then learn the vibration part from this book.

This book was used as 3000 level class for my undergraduate program. The fact that it is a soft-cover book makes it cheaper than any other engineering books with hard-cover. If you have to buy it for your class, then goodluck!; but, I'd not recommend this book if you are buying it for self-studying.

Book that covers the basics with little fanfare

So far as substance, it's a good book. It's mostly succinct and well written, but seems lacking compared to other books out there. The examples are good enough, but not top-notch, in my opinion. It wasn't outrageously expensive, which is always nice, but I wouldn't expect anything outstanding out of this book. In a nutshell, it gets the job done.

Good or bad? New or old? The rich connotations of the word 'biotechnology' reflect a history that stretches back more than seventy years. To some, the concept describes the evolving crafts of industrial production using micro-organisms. To others, biotechnology is a product of the recombinant techniques only recently developed by molecular biologists. It has been seen simply as a means of wealth production and as a new kind of technology--sometimes as distinctively benevolent and at all other times as particularly dangerous.

Robert Bud shows how the hopes and fears for the combination of biology with engineering have been an integral part of the history of the twentieth century, including the Great Depression of the 1930s, the two world wars, and the more recent anxieties over genetic and entrepreneurial industry. Skillfully, the author relates biotechnology's origins in the chemistry and microbiology of the nineteenth century. Personalities with influential roles in its subsequent development such as Chaim Weizmann, Kark Ereky, Patrick Geddes, Lewis Mumford, Joshua Lederberg, and Jeremy Rifkin, among many others, are discussed. Analysis of the changing roles and hopes for biotechnology in government and society takes the book to the end of the 1980s, when recombinant DNA techniques had become the dominant driving force behind what today we think of as biotechnology.

This first history of biotechnology provides a readable and challenging account for anyone interested in the development of this key component of modern industry.

The story starts with a narrative of the bloody battle between the Christians and Muslims that occurred 821 years after Hijira, the term that refers to Mohammad’s flight to Mecca. The story then shifts to a military operation hunting the Taliban and Al Qaeda, being led by US Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander Grant Chisolm. He is actually on a mission to avenge his father's assassination by a Lebanon Islamist in 1980. Meanwhile Moustafa Arius Riat al-Haj or detainee 9696 is being escorted to the infamous US prison base camp at Guantanamo in Cuba. The paths of these two enigmatic men, who are on the opposite sides of the terrorist war between the East and the West, will finally converge when Chisolm becomes a liaison officer in Guantanamo. The soldier's professional and personal battle against these jihadists will eventually force him to try to understand the Islamist and will make him realize the gravity of the task that he faces.

Indeed, reading this book lets us go on a journey into the depths of the mind of a terrorist who is waging a war against the West today.

So much more than just a thrilling read...

I found Eric Wentz's first book 'Piercing the Veil' in the Olcott Library in Wheaton, illinois and loved it so much so I wrote to the author to tell him just that. He sent me this his second novel. Mr Wentz uses all his own military experience and creative talent to lace a terrifying adventure story with facts I would never otherwise have known. Embellish that story with his natural poetic writing style, hints of ancient chivalry and heroic bravery and the novel is given an added sense of the spiritual. It is so so much more than just a thrilling read.
I love it when I find an author who writes from his own deep experiental knowledge and threads an adventure story with facts and information he has personally gathered and not merely researched. I got goosepimples reading so much of this book and knowing this was based on fact. I felt I was walking the corridors of Quantanamo or diving off its coastline. Both equally claustrophobic experiences I still recall so clearly, months after having finished the novel.
Now I am waiting with baited breath for the movies .... and who will play the gorgeous Grant Chisholm.

"Killing Sharks: De Profundis" by Eric Wentz is in some ways a typical modern political thriller in that it has the elements we have come to associate with such literature – a strong military figure who is something of a maverick, fuzzy ineffectual politicians, a variety of settings in some of the world’s more tortured regions and acts of terror either realized or threatened. However, this novel takes it to a deeper level. The characters are rounded, actions are considered and explained, and there is substance to the emotions portrayed. Lieutenant Commander Grant Chisolm, who has already appeared in a previous novel by this author, is a powerful, resourceful and courageous protagonist, and provides a suitably strong heart for this gritty, pulsating novel. In his new role as liaison officer at Guantanamo he has to have very close dealings with the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. The threat of terror is constantly there. You will almost forget to breathe when you are reading this book.

The author clearly has a vast knowledge of military matters and history and he shares this with us in this novel. We can’t help but share his fascination as we are pulled into this tightly woven story. We meet a wide cast of characters, from likable and noble to downright evil, and encounter many different emotions. There are touches of humor to lighten the generally serious and suspenseful atmosphere. There is a very helpful glossary of terms which explains terms like jihad, CENTCOM, etc. It is a good thing as you don’t feel silly if these are terms you either haven’t come across before or have never fully understood. There are also notes and a map. I would have preferred not to have the reviews at the beginning of the book. They would be better on the book’s website or at the end. They also mean you have to wait longer to start reading this excellent book. And more is given away by the table of contents with chapters with such headings as ‘Caffeinated Diplomacy’ and ‘A Wary Interview’. Definitely a book to read.
