This totally original architecture bookthe first comprehensive work on brick, the essential building materialranges over every culture throughout history. It follows the story of brick from 5,000 BC to the twenty-first century, from the vast baths and basilicas of ancient Rome, through the wonders of Gothic brick in Germany, Buddhist shrines in Burma, and Mughal mosques in Iran, to the modern revival of brick in the hands of architects like Gaudi. Marvelously illustrated with specially taken photographs, the book is at once an historical account of how bricks have been employed by architects of every period, a technical survey of brickmaking and bricklaying, and an essay in architectural and cultural history. More than one hundred themes are covered, from bricks in ancient Egypt to their distinctive use by Louis Kahn, Alvar Aalto, and Renzo Piano. Works of engineeringrailway tunnels, viaducts, dams, and bridgesare given prominence alongside the great cathedrals and country houses, castles and temples, testifying to the versatility and importance of brick and brickwork. An illustrated glossary explains all technical terms and the various construction and bonding methods in use. From Publishers Weekly
Proceeding chronologically from the first Neolithic "bun bricks" to relatively high-tech contemporary forms, Cambridge University art historian Campbell and documentary photographer Pryce reveal the building blocks of the Coliseum, the Taj Mahal, the Florence Cathedral and the Chrysler Building, as well as more humble abodes. Pryce's photos are stunning, making up the bulk of the 600 illustrations here (570 in color) and miraculously capturing the outlines of each brick, even in such massive structures as the Great Mosque in Isfahan, Iran, or the beautiful Buddhist temples of Pagan in Myanmar. He also documents brickmaking in the Bulmer Brickworks in Suffolk, England, as a worker moulds, "strikes," "drops" and dusts large, ochre, rectangular bricks. The photos, as well as excellent period technical illustrations, are laid out in compelling two-page spreads, each with subheading (e.g., "Petrus Cuypers and the Gothic Revival in Holland") in this 9.75" 12.5" book, and are matched by Campbell's clear and intense historiography. In Sumerian times, he notes, offerings of food and drink were presented to "the brick god," who was "represented in the ritual by the first brick." More recently, mortar for the foundations of the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was mixed with "a broth of barley and bark of elm" and sacred relics, accompanied by prayers, placed between every 12 bricks. A lack of detail on Chinese use of brick, particularly early brickwork, is a drawback, but the Islamic world is well-covered, and Campbell's refreshing focus on the brickmakers (often family-run businesses) and bricklayers themselves shows how techniques were kept secret to prevent early forms of industrial espionage, now posing a challenge to contemporary scholars trying to figure out how bricks were engineered even as late as the Victorian era.

From Booklist
An ur-building material, brick is astonishingly versatile and often stunning. Art historian Campbell and architect and photographer Pryce present the first comprehensive international study of the technology and aesthetics of the humble but endlessly useful brick in a volume meritorious for its spectacular color photographs, nearly 600 in number, and the panoramic scope of its text. The fired brick was first invented in Neolithic Jericho, then taken up with great alacrity and skill in Mesopotamia and Egypt and by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Moving slowly forward in time, Campbell and Bryce chart the rapid evolution of brick making and bricklaying, explicating such marvels as the Colosseum and the Great Wall of China. Religious ardor in the Middle Ages inspired the construction of incredibly elaborate brick cathedrals, intricately patterned mosques, and such beautiful Asian Buddhist structures as Pagan, Burma, a brick dream consisting of several thousand temples and stupas. From castles to schools to New York's Chrysler Building, Campbell and Pryce explicate premier examples of engineering ingenuity and architectural grace, all based on the ubiquitous brick. BRICK

All in all it's just another brick in the wall ... NOT! This book is fabulous. I bought it for my dad who has been a bricklayer since he was a teenager. He is fascinated by the history. The photos are also magnificent. A very fine read!

Particularly nice book design and photography
By misterbeets
The author writes easily, seems to know everything, and has a completely unpretentious style. He also chose his subjects well, with many less-well-known examples and only a few icons. As a historian, he occasionaly suffers from their tendency to document, say, the names and ruling periods of the Middle Ages Persian kings before getting to the interesting parts about the use of brick in that era. The photographs are all similar to the one on the cover--deep colors and bright sunlight--and their consistency adds a nice touch. The organization of the book was good too, presenting the subject in manageable bites.

brief terrorism dictionary
By William Garrison Jr.
"Dictionary of Terrorism" by David Wright-Neville (Apr. 2010), 221 pgs. Well, it's okay for general reference; if you want to want to learn a FEW MORE details than what is reported in your local newspaper. But, NOT a WHOLE lot of info - about only 200 words on any topic/terrorist group. As far as "terrorism" goes, it seems a bit farfetched for the author to toss in "John Wilkes Booth" as a terrorist for assassinating U.S. Pres. Abraham Lincoln (1865), but fails to list the Muslim prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for originating the fundamentals for Islamo fascism (see: "The Truth About Muhammad" by R. Spencer). The author noted that after shooting Lincoln, pro-Confederate Booth yelled "Sic simper tyrannis! (`Thus always to tyrants!') and noted that the phrase had been originated by the assassins of Julius Caesar, but the author apparently did not know/reveal that the motto was also on the state flag of nearby Confederate Virginia. Actually, I liked "Dictionary of Terrorism" by J.R. Thackrah better, it had more detailed info - but it being a 2004 publication has made it a bit stale-dated. Although a little pricer, I'd suggest instead: "Historical Dictionary of Terrorism" (3rd ed.: Aug. 2009) by S. Anderson with almost 4 times the number of pages: 880.

Euclid and Jesus: How and why the church changed mathematics and Christianity across two religious wars, by C. K. Raju

Euclid is celebrated as the father of geometry, and author of the Elements, a book once revered like the Bible, but now a school text. Strangely, Greek manuscripts do not mention Euclid, but speak anonymously of the “author of the Elements”. Did Euclid exist? Was the real author of the Elements a woman, Hypatia? Was she black? The mystery geometry of black Egypt aimed to arouse the soul, and prove equity, as in Plato's story of Socrates and the slave boy. Early Christians had similar beliefs about the soul, but the church changed Christian doctrine to enable its priests to rule. When pagans resisted, the church retaliated violently: it smashed their temples, burnt their libraries, cursed the early beliefs about the soul, and banned philosophy. This plunged Christendom into its Dark Age, but catalysed the Islamic Golden Age. The contrast fuelled envy, and Christian priests incited the Crusades, hoping to grab Muslim wealth—but the Crusades failed beyond Spain. To convert Muslims, who accepted reason, the church now sought mathematics, connecting it to Christian doctrine by changing both. That led to a subtle religious bias in mathematics, and to its racist history. This book is for the layperson concerned that both biases are still being thrust upon schoolchildren today.

This narrative is a perfect example of how even though facts are out in ...
By Rohith
This narrative is a perfect example of how even though facts are out in the public, we wont usually connect the dots to realize the lies peddled to us by organized cults. It would have taken immense effort to collect all the facts mentioned in the book. Connecting the dots is the easiest thing.

A systematic annihilation of the myth "most of secular scientific knowledge has originated in Greece". It is the single biggest crime committed against human psych by current secular educators. Many of us would have had a feeling that it is a myth. We can even see the means and opportunity of the church to carry out such a crime through its "world class" universities. After all, even during the age of Internet, authorities get away with lying for several years before truth is uncovered. So it must be very easy in medieval times. The challenge is not finding the means and opportunity. The challenge is finding a motive. You can't really charge them guilty without it. This book provides exactly that, the motive: Why is it necessary for a systematic myth building about origin of knowledge in Greece? What is the necessity for the church(priests to be precise) to start such a myth?

This book is more enlightening to an honest Christian who believes in the doctrine of love but is shocked by doctrine of sin used by Church throughout history to oppress people.

In spirit of following the author's advice in the epilogue, the best way to read the book is to check every fact mentioned by the author after each chapter:
As for those young people who are victims of these biases, get rid of those biases even if they are forced on you by your parents and teachers. A simple way to do so is to ask questions. If the answers sound like story-telling, used to preserve lies, you know what trick is at work. Remember, they can’t capture your mind without your consent. Don’t give that consent: keep asking questions, and see how those stories fall apart.

A Perfect Mess: The Hidden Benefits of Disorder - How Crammed Closets, Cluttered, by Eric Abrahamson

"An engaging polemic against the neat-police who hold so much sway over our lives." -The Wall Street Journal

Enthusiastically embraced by readers everywhere, this groundbreaking book is an antidote to the accepted wisdom that tight schedules, neatness, and consistency are the keys to success.

With an astounding array of anecdotes and case studies of the useful role mess can play in business, parenting, cooking, the war on terrorism, hardware stores, and even the meteoric career of Arnold Schwarzenegger, coauthors Abrahamson and Freedman demonstrate that moderately messy systems use resources more efficiently, yield better solutions, and are harder to break than neat ones. From clutter to time sprawl to blurring of categories, A PERFECT MESS will forever change the way we think about disorder.

"A compelling and comical tour of humanity's guilt-ridden love affair with accidents, messes, and randomness... Combine the world-is-not-as-it-seems mindset of Freakonomics with the delicious celebration of popular culture found in Everything Bad Is Good for You to get the cocktail-party-chatter-ready anecdotes of 'messiness leading to genius' in A PERFECT MESS." -Fast Company

Strong on ideas, light on useful suggestions
By Trent Hamm
Over the last several years, I've worked very hard to become more and more organized with my stuff. I used to have a very difficult time finding things that I needed when I needed them and I also had some degree of difficulty effectively managing my time. Thankfully, over the last few years, I've really managed to conquer both of these. I feel incredibly productive on an average day now and I rarely have trouble finding the things that I need.

Yet with all this organization, I find that there are simply some things where organization gets in the way. The best example I can think of is brainstorming. When I go to the library, I find lots of books and articles worth reading. I often photocopy interesting passages there. At home, I often jot down notes from things that I observe as well as tearing articles out of magazines as I read them.

This ends up being something of a pile of ideas. And what I've found is that this pile of ideas is much more effective if it's chaotic. If I try to order it, I get fewer ideas out of that pile. On the other hand, if I just let it be, tossing new stuff on there in a haphazard fashion, it starts to click. Then I just set aside some time each week for brainstorming, where I grab articles from that pile at random, read what I've highlighted, flip through personal finance books, and so on. This chaos generates ideas - things that would not have normally associated themselves together sometimes become linked because of this mess.

Frankly, sometimes it's better to have disorder. And that's the idea behind A Perfect Mess by Eric Abrahamson and David H. Freedman. They argue that there is often a significant benefit in productivity, creativity, resilience, and profit in allowing a certain level of messiness and they offer a ton of advice in finding that balance.

1. The Cost of Neatness
Abrahamson and Freedman open the book by arguing that there is a significant cost to neatness, one that is often not repaid by the benefits of neatness. One particular example they use is that of an ordered pack of playing cards, used in essence to represent a filing system. If you need to retrieve four specific cards from a pack of playing cards, it will be much easier to find them from a pack that's organized by suit and rank than from a pack that's in random order. However, there's a very large up front cost in actually organizing the cards into order. Plus, there's also a time cost in refiling - when you have to return the four cards, you have to put them back in the right place in the ordered deck, whereas with the unordered deck, you can throw them in wherever (or perhaps right at the front, because you're likely to need certain files more often than others). They argue that the time cost of the initial filing plus the time cost of refiling doesn't add up to equal the net benefit of being able to pull out a particular card a bit more quickly.

2. A Mess Sampler
Here, several areas of messiness are surveyed: desks, lawns, corporate planning, and noisy phone calls are discussed in detail. They conclude from these surveys that there is an inherent cultural bias towards neatness, but that this cultural bias might not be beneficial at all in many situations. I particularly liked the argument about lawns - it struck a note with my green sensibilities. Imagine a suburban neighborhood where everyone keeps their lawn immaculate with regular mowing, fertilizers, and seeding that damages the soil over the long term but keeps a gorgeous lawn in the short term. Then, imagine one house that's "green" and would rather that their lawn become natural prairie than the well-fertilized beasts around them. Guess who's considered the outcast?

3. The History of Mess
Something of a history of organization follows, covering in detail many historical movements. In particular, Frederick Winslow Taylor is discussed - he was a business analyst in the late 19th and early 20th century who wrote the very influential book Principles of Scientific Management, which argued strongly on behalf of time organization and regimentation within the workplace. In short, they seem to conclude that the pro-organization and anti-mess philosophy of today largely comes from principles that work in narrow situations that came to be applied and accepted in a far broader sense than they were originally intended.

4. The Benefits of Mess
Abrahamson and Freedman offer tons of examples of how messiness is actually beneficial in various methods of life, piling together a ton of anecdotes that make a lot of sense. One example that particularly stood out to me was that of Harvey's, a small-town hardware store that basically just crams stuff on the shelves and effectively relies on personal observations of customers and employees to know when to restock. The whole store comes off as chaotic and unorganized, but because of the arrangement, they save money on organization (there's no real need for more organized stocking) and on sales per square feet (because there's so much jammed in there, customers walk by more items on their way to and from their intended purchase, increasing impulse buying opportunities).

5. Messy People
The authors address the idea that people are messy in very different ways, some healthy and some not so healthy. The crux of their argument here seems to be that there's a happy medium point that's effective - one can easily be too messy, while people can also become completely obsessed with organization. Most of the examples show this conflict - people tend to be successful with some degree of disorganization in their life, but are distracted by too much messiness or too much obsession with neatness.

6. Messy Homes
My mother was a firm believer in the idea of "dirty floors and happy kids," meaning that it was more important to build a strong relationship with your children than it was to keep a perfectly clean house. I tend to believe in the same thing - you're better off playing out in the yard with your children than scrubbing in the corner with a toothbrush. The authors go even further here, suggesting that most disorganization in the home is merely a sign of being lived in - why have a spotless garage if your kids don't have a place to put their baseball gloves?

7. Mess and Organizations
If the last several years have taught us anything in the technology sector, it's that large, traditional, top-down organizations don't innovate nearly as well as seemingly chaotic little startups. Why is that? In smaller organizations, there's more opportunity for people to interact from different parts of the organization - the CEO might have an office next door to most of the coding team and they interact several times daily. That type of interaction - and thus "messiness" of ideas - doesn't happen in larger organizations. Again, there are some limits to this - this works well for a team of 20, but chaos in a team of 20,000 can be a huge problem.

8. Messy Leadership
The primary point of this chapter is that there is no standard pattern of leadership, nor is there any standard pattern for messiness. People lead effectively in different ways, and they show this through profiles of different leaders, from the strong questioning and anti-authoritarian leadership of Bert Rutan to the highly structured leadership of Steve Jobs at Apple. My take from this is that generic guides for how to be a leader don't really work - there are lots of leadership styles and there's no recipe to blindly follow to success.

9. The Politics of Mess
Our laws are a perfect example of the mix of order and chaos. Laws are often haphazard and seemingly contradictory, plus they're being edited and rewritten all the time. Yet, out of the chaos of laws comes the order of society, where we have a ton of freedom and individual autonomy while so many of our needs (like roads, laws that protect our property and safety, etc.) are just simply met. Great success and order from chaos, indeed.

10. Optimizing Mess
A big theme of this book has been that a certain level of mess is good, but how do you deal with things if there's too much mess - or not enough mess? The rule of thumb here seems to be to try new things, usually an increment at a time. My favorite example of this was "no luck poker," which sought to greatly reduce the randomness in the amount of luck in poker. This would make poker less "messy" and more organized - and, obviously, it flopped. Why? Poker (at least in the no limit hold `em variety) has a very nice balance of order and messiness, and disrupting that makes for a less compelling game.

11. Messy Thinking
I quite liked this chapter, as it summed up quite well why my method of having a pile of random ideas and notes seems to work so well for my writing. In a nutshell, messiness helps in situations where making connections that aren't observed by others is valuable. Brainstorming is the perfect example of this - when you're just pitching thoughts, messiness is a very good thing. On the other hand, when you're fleshing out an idea, less messiness is good - you need a framework, not a bunch of ideas flopping around in the muck.

12. Pathological Mess
Excessive messiness (or excessive neatness) is often the sign of a psychological problem. For example, excessive hoarders (people who keep so much stuff that they have to wall off pieces of their homes, for instance) are exhibiting symptoms of pathological messiness, as are people who have a hard time concentrating on specific tasks for more than a moment or two. If messiness causes deep obstructions in your day to day life, seek some help. Some messiness is good - too much is a real problem.

13. The Aesthetics of Mess
Abrahamson and Freedman close the book with the astute point that messiness and disorganization plays a key role in art, both high art and popular art. Pulp Fiction, for example, is successful because of the messiness of the ordering of scenes; Donnie Darko is another example of how disorder in the plot makes the entire thing more compelling. The idea of a strict beginning, strict middle, and strict end of an organized book, film, show, or anything often limits what can be told - tossing out that structure and making it messy also makes things interesting.

*Some Thoughts on A Perfect Mess*
Here are three things I think I think about A Perfect Mess.

It's really all about optimization. Organization is only useful if it winds up being a net gain after you subtract the invested time. That's why most overarching organization schemes tend to fail - there's too much work involved in maintaining the system.

This is also why GTD works for me. There's almost no overhead for GTD, at least the way I do it. My method is a nice mix of messiness and order - I just jot down thoughts in my notebook as they come to mind and deal with that little mess later on. Instead of trying to keep stuff ordered, I find it more important to just get the ideas down and deal with that little mess later.

This book was long on ideas, but light on specific actionable points. Mostly, it just seems to be a very effective and thought-provoking argument against over-organization. It doesn't offer specifics on finding that balance for yourself, other than to try new things incrementally instead of diving in to a huge, overarching organization plan.

*Is A Perfect Mess Worth Reading?*
A Perfect Mess is loaded with a lot of compelling thinking about the balance between organization and messiness and often concludes that messiness (to an extent) is a very good thing.

If this seems like a no-brainer to you, this book probably won't light your fire. On the other hand, if you find yourself disagreeing with or intrigued by the premise, particularly if you have challenges with organization in your own life, A Perfect Mess is an enjoyable and thought-provoking read.

My only real complaint is that it doesn't offer much specific direction on how to find the right messiness balance in your own life. You have to dig that out from in between the lines. It might have been powerful to have a final chapter that drags those points and principles out into the open.

Even given that, A Perfect Mess was a worthwhile, compelling read. Check it out.

Don't lose this book in your clutter
By Dr. Cathy Goodwin
I have a feeling reviewers of this book will be self-selected. You're drawn to A Perfect Mess if you're living in clutter now and are tired of being told to "Just get organized." Judging by this book's amazon rank, that's a lot of us.

I can remember having the messiest desk in my grade school class and then the messiest office in my building when I was a college professor. My home office is cluttered. But when I try to get organized, I just end up losing things.

Besides, I love reading books that question our basic, taken-for-granted assumptions.

The best parts of the book are those that call attention to the cultural aspects of messiness. Countries have different definitions of order. The Japanese (possibly because they live in small spaces) tend to take a high level of neatness for granted. Parking garages won't accept motorcycles because they don't fit the definition of cars, according to the authors.

Secondly, the authors spell out the astronomically high value Americans place on organization. Professional organizers flourish. We spend millions on closet organization. Many people (and even more organizations) associate messiness with incompetence.

The authors carried out their own informal interviews, but they could have cited research. About 20 years ago a professor at Arizona State University, Mary Jo Bitner, conducted experiments where she showed airline passengers photos of a travel agent's desk. One group got the "messy" version and others got the "neat" version. Passengers were prepared to blame the "messy" agent for all sorts of errors, even those beyond the agent's control.

Around the same time, I recall reading a newspaper article addressing the reactions of freshmen at UC Berkeley to their "unkempt" professors. Some (especially those from uniform-wearing private schools) had to be convinced that a messy person could be smart.

On a micro level, we learn that people have different styles of organization. The authors introduce us to Judith Kollberg, who recognizes people who can't work with standard categorization systems. She identifies their strengths as she defines unique programs for each one. I suspect I'd fit this definition. When I create my own ad hoc systems, I stay organized more than when I try to follow others.

Naturally, I was drawn to the chapters citing the negative elements of organizing. Lawns make no sense in arid climates, yet homeowners' associations encourage them. I particularly liked the 7 ineffective habits of time management: personally I think "focus" can be overrated, especially in early stages of an enterprise.

The chapter on the history of mess and order is priceless. "God was the first professional organizer." It's not about religion: it's the notion that humans have always sought to bring order out of chaos.

A Perfect Mess does get messy in places (as other reviewers have noted). The authors express their philosophy as they create this book. They never say, "Here's precisely what we're discussing." They never define. So some scenarios seem to relate more to customer service, randomness or ad hoc responsiveness than to messiness.

On the plus side, we readers get an amusing book that's thought-provoking, well-written and fun to read. On the negative side, we get a jumble. Some case studies are really about customer service and randomness rather than messiness.

In the end, ironically, the messiness of the book supports its own message. The only boring part of the book comes in the chapter on classifying the messy and the mess.

Messiness triumphs. Earlier the authors show how messiness creates unexpected connections: a scientist picks up two papers from his messy desk, makes a connection and creates a blazing new discovery. Here, some topics can be neutralized because they're discussed in the context of messiness.

For example, the authors show that we are hard wired to see order even where none exists. We try to tidy up our memories. We believe that bad things happen because people deserve them (the famous "just world" theory). While this section has a questionable place in the book, I wish the authors had said more rather than less. For example, a lot of New Age beliefs like "Things happen for a reason" can be traced to this mental pattern.

If these topics had been relegated properly to a psychology book, many readers would never learn about them. Yet everyone who relies on memories to make decisions (as as juries in legal systems) should understand the way our minds work. Presenting these concepts in relation to messiness takes away much of the emotional charge and makes readers more willing to listen.

Bottom line: Despite a few flaws, I am delighted to see this book. It's high time we recognized the subtle discrimination pervading society against the organizationally challenged. Here's a great first step. Let's see some bumper stickers with the red "no" slash against the word "organization."

Sometimes a mess is okay
By Debra Hamel
In their book A Perfect Mess: The Hidden Benefits of Disorder authors Eric Abrahamson (a professor of management at Columbia Business School) and David H. Freedman (a contributing editor at Inc. magazine) question the widespread assumption that organization and neatness are inherently better than disorder and clutter. They argue that in fact some degree of messiness is very often to be preferred to strict order--because the cost of maintaining order can be higher than the benefits accrued from it, for example, because disorder can be the mother of invention, because messy systems can be more efficient and robust than perfectly neat ones. In making their case Abrahamson and Freedman do not confine themselves to domestic mess--the topic that leapt to my mind when I first saw the book's title. Clutter is just one of twelves types into which they categorize messiness. Others include "time sprawl," as when tasks are left unprioritized, and "convolution," which occurs when organizational schemes are illogical. Accordingly, the authors discuss not only messy homes and offices but messy leadership and messy organizations, pathological messiness and artistic messiness.

The topics covered in A Perfect Mess are far reaching--from the suspect claims of professional organizers (for example, that the average person wastes an hour a day looking for things) to Arnold Schwarzenegger's "improvisational lifestyle" (incredibly enough, he doesn't keep a schedule, or didn't, at least, when he was first running for governor), from the Noguchi filing system to natural landscaping to cell phone noise and compulsive hoarding. Throughout, the authors profile people and businesses and systems that have profited from the introduction of some degree of some type of messiness.

"...we argue that there is an optimal level of mess for every aspect of every system. That is in, in any situation there is a type and level of mess at which effectiveness is maximized, and our assertion is that people and organizations frequently err on the side of overorganization. In many cases, they can improve by increasing mess, if it's done in the right way. At a minimum, recognizing the benefits of mess can be a major stress reducer--many of us are already operating at a more-or-less appropriate level of mess but labor under the mistaken belief that we're failing in some way because of it."

A Perfect Mess is an interesting book, written for the general reader in perfectly comprehensible prose. The authors' thesis won't necessarily surprise readers. If you think about it, it's obvious enough that there must be some optimal level of order for every situation. But it's not so much the conclusion that matters here as the guided tour through the messy worlds of city planning and hardware stores and trombone tuning and so on: you'll almost certainly learn something along the way, and in the end you may feel a little better about letting the dishes pile up.

No other species of giant snake is bred in a comparable variety of color patterns as the ball python.
Its robust constitution and easily fulfilled demands on husbandry conditions make it perfectly suited for breeding projects of this kind as well as an almost 'normal' pet.

Stefan Broghammer is the leading German expert on the husbandry and breeding of ball pythons. He has been importing potentially new color morphs directly from Africa for many years, knows from his own observations how the snakes live there, and is regarded as a pioneer in the field of designer morph breeding.

With this comprehensive atlas, Stefan Broghammer does not only discuss in detail the preconditions required to successfully keep and propagate ball pythons, but also provides an all-inclusive in-depth portrayal of all morphs available at present. The wealth of unique photographs alone - over 1,100 - makes his treatise a feast for the eyes!

About the Author
Born in Barbados, West Indies, Neville came to the United States to study drama at the age of seventeen. In 1932 he gave up the theater to devote his attention to his studies in mysticism when he began his lecture career in New York City. After traveling throughout the country, he eventually made his home in Los Angeles where, in the late 1950's, he gave a series of talks on television, and for many years, lectured regularly to capacity audiences at the Wilshire Ebell Theater. Although Neville's career peaked in the late 1950's and early 60's, his message continues to find a place in the hearts of spiritual readers throughout the world today. Neville Goddard was one of the more quietly dramatic and supremely influential teachers in the New Thought field for many years.

Just Buy It,.. And follow it, and Be What this book Teaches
By Steve Bailey
It's almost ludicrous that the price of this book is equal to that of a music CD, given the potential impact to one's life if its teachings are embraced and practiced. It is IMPOSSIBLE to put a value on this book!! It is beyond any of the existing self-development or metaphysical material I've ever read, though the basic premise has been covered by many writers, even Napoleon Hill. While Hill spends some time covering how important it is to visualize your goals, Neville basically drills it into you in the deepest, most profound way, and his writings all hammer into you the exact method by which you need to "feel" as if you're already there in your desired circumstance, place, goal achievement, reality, whatever.
Neville illustrates the teachings of the Bible to show how the Bible alludes to how important it is to see yourself as you WANT TO BE, not what your 5 senses are seeing right now. If you're not religious, don't let this dissuade you. You will finally understand the wonderful symbology of the Bible and what It teaches you. In Resurrection, Neville convinces you that your desired reality actually exists, but you need to *feel* yourself into this reality without doubt, before it materializes....

A major difference between Neville and other more modern metaphysical writers is that Neville's teachings impress upon you the importance of Identity. Instead of trying to be a "doer": visualize and affirm until you believe something.. you instead assume the very Identity of the version of you that is already in that desired circumstance. How? With Feeling.
Leave behind the version of you that is -wanting- and that is -lacking- in consciousness. Be consumed by that identity, that version of you, that is *already* fulfilled, seeing the world -from- that fulfilled view, *even* when the outside "facts" show otherwise. Don't come at this from a feeling of lack, or "try to get something" with techniques, as in: "I must apply this law of attraction stuff in just the right way, or I will be in lack".
Neville is way ahead of the familiar LOA stuff - he speaks very matter of factly about how basic and True these principles are, and he's trying to get through to you that you must remember that the outer world is just a blank canvas and your Inner habit of Feeling, from morning to night, is the -only- source, the only thing that this canvas can get material from!
Instead, simply Be that which you desire, to the point that it almost wouldn't even matter if the outer material world reflected your desired life, because you are already being that fulfilled version of yourself and you Feel it. When you read and re-read Neville, you'll see
----------
By the way, if this book is unavailable, first try several metaphysics shops, including the used section. Keep in mind, that this book is a collection of short pamphlet-size books, really. And the relatively new book, The Neville Reader, contains the vast majority of these mini-books!

The best minibook in my opinion: Feeling Is The Secret 1944, and another one I love is: Prayer: The Art of Believing 1945,.. but the whole collection is dynamite.

I bought the Neville Reader myself, even though I own Resurrection, so I'd recommend the Neville Reader book also, regardless.

Mental pregnancy ...
By A Customer
Neville, a prolific writer and lecturer deals with creative visualization and the transformation of consciousness. This outstanding book addresses: Prayer - The Art of Believing, Feeling Is The Secret, Freedom For All, Out of This World, and Resurrection. Memorable comments abound, including: change the future (216), rapport between the conscious and subconscious mind of the operator (14), be careful of your moods (76), the perfectly disciplined person (103), mental pregnancy (151), and as you judge others (171). As Walt Goodridge says in his Amazon review: This book, if you're ready for it, will help you achieve control of your life, power over your destiny, and the ability to create miracles in your everyday existence!

LIFE CHANGING!
By A Customer
This book, if you're ready for it, will help you achieve control of your life, power over your destiny, and the ability to create miracles in your everyday existence!
Sometimes words fail to adequately convey just how powerful a book can be. When I first read Neville, it was just after reading another book called 3 Magic Words. Neville's words seemed to be the next level of "how to" to the theory and principles of "Words". I recommend it highly, (You know you're ready for it simply by virture of being here at this website reading this..that's how the universe works!)
I recommend it in the Spiritual Growth list of my Millionaire University Booklist on my website!

How did the ancient Greeks regard music? In many different ways, as the readings in Greek Views of Music reveal.

This collection presents three entire treaties, as well as excerpted writings on music by Plato, Aristotle, and others. Included is the first English translation of Gaudentius's complete Harmonic Introduction, prepared by the volume's editor, Thomas J. Mathieson, who also revised the other translations in light of recent scholarship. These selections not only illuminate Greek thinking about music, they also help us understand ideas about music set forth by medieval and Renaissance writers and theorists.
