A masterpiece for learning pharmacology

This book is a superb piece of work from a teaching and a learning point of view. The author has put aside the traditional way of teaching a raw discipline, custommarily full of information difficult to retain. The subject is taken into a new dimmension, dividing by different clinical applications each one with a previous pathology, physiopathology, clinical characteristic and the pharmacological management required for each case. For example, respiratory emergencies are extensively reviewed, its different physiopathologies are described, the clinical characteristics common to each one, and the pharmacological treatment recommended in the prehospital setting. Every chapter is written the same way, thus providing the reader with a unique opportunity to blend over in a whole view the physiopatology, the clinical aspect and the pharmacological management in the field of an illness. I have no doubt this book contributes greatly to make young paramedics competent clinicians, and allow senior paramedics to hold their titles as Masters of Clinics.

Grade 2-4-Gilchrist has clearly done substantial research for this collection of folktales from countries along the ancient trade route. She has uncovered so much information to supplement the folklore that she includes an introduction; a character called the "Spirit of the Silk Road," whose two-page spiels preface each individual story; and two pages of facts at the end of the book. The result is a collection of seven tales, somewhat weighted down by the burden of explanatory matter. The stories themselves are unusual enough that libraries with large folklore collections or with a strong interest in Asia may want to purchase this title. A few of the selections are reminiscent of European or American variants. "Clever Ashik" is similar to the riddle-solving "Clever Gretchen" and the wish-granting "Magic Saddlebag" is like Jack's magic tablecloth in "Jack and the Northwest Wind." Other tales are more culture specific, such as "Monkey and the River Dragon" from China or "A Rainbow in Silk" from Uzbekistan. Gilchrist's writing is bland, showing little variation as she moves from people to people. Mistry's gouache paintings illuminate the costumes, architecture, and terrain along the way. Geography, Culture, and Great Stories!

This has been a favorite for our kids from about kindergarten on up, and perhaps even a bit earlier. In Bearfoot Book style, this book includes a full curriculum of art, geography, religion and history in the form of plain old good, engaging stories. The silk road slinks from China through the deserts of Central Asia and into the Middle East, and in this age when so much new history is being written in Central Asia and the Middle East the stories and the accompanying discussions will really help orient your kids to the broader world.

Among the stories that have struck our kids the most are "Monkey and the River Dragon", which should keep the kids laughing through the whole story, and "The Bride and the Horse's head", a story with more pathos and tragedy.

The art in this book particularly stands out, even with the high standards usually set by Barefoot Books, and the maps are a particularly colorful delight. Among kids books, this is one of the better selections when you are reading to children that span all the elementary school grades, as it has something of interest for the older kids as well as the younger ones.

Great Tales from the Silk Road

This book has a series of tales from the Silk Road countries - China, Uzbekistan, Kirghizstan, and Afghanistan. They are easy to read and interesting. I have Afghan students and recently saw the Afghan treasures show at the National Gallery. This book goes along well with a teacher's unit on this area of the world. We don't teach much about Central Asia and I think we often don't much about it. This is a book that gives the area more life and interest in Central Asia.

This book I found frustrating. At a quick glance it seems to be giving me information, but when I actually try to follow advise I come up short. It seems you my need to buy all his books to get real information out of this book. I will say I did find some useful information but was overall unhappy and was left with the feeling like a kid in a candy store with no money. Look and smell but nothing to eat.

The rigid internaI fixation of mandibular fractures has become a widely ac­ cepted practice among European surgeons. The caution or even outright re­ jection voiced at a congress of the German Society of Maxillofacial Sur­ 1970s is no longer prevalent. Through a process of geons held in the late critical review and implementation, rigid internaI fixation has become an established treatment modality at numerous centers, especially in Switzer­ land, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Netherlands. By comparison, the method has received very little attention in North America and the Anglo-Saxon countries. By and large, surgeons in these countries continue to treat mandibular fractures by intermaxillary fixation, possibly supplemented by the use of interosseous wires. Many recent edi­ tions of surgical texts confirm this. Lately, however, there appears to be a surge of interest in methods of functionally stable internaI fixation, especially in the United States of America, and AO/ ASIF instruction courses are increasingly in demand. This book is intended to aid course participants in their lessons and practi­ cal exercises and also to guide the clinical practitioner in the application of AO/ ASIF principles.
