About the Author
Dr Ian Oliver is a privacy officer and software engineer specialising in the construction of information systems with privacy as an inherent property. He has taken ideas from safety-critical systems development, aviation and medicine to better comprehend, understand and formalise an engineering approach that unifies the legal and engineering aspects of privacy together to make privacy relevant and implementable to the practising software engineer. He currently works for Nokia Networks and holds a Research Fellow position at the University of Brighton working with the Visual Modelling Group on diagrammatic forms of reasoning, description logics with the occasional foray into category theory. Prior to that as the privacy officer for Here and Nokia Services, and for eleven years at Nokia Research Centre working with Semantic Web, UML, formal methods and hardware-software co-design. He has also worked at Helsinki University of Technology and Aalto University teaching formal methods and modelling with UML. He holds 30 patents in areas such as The Internet of Things, semantic technologies and privacy. Ian lives in Sipoo, Finland with his wife, two children, dog and cat.

I'm not commenting on the content as such here, it is one potential approach. Why I only give a 2 star rating to the Kindle edition is because this version is very badly formatted to the extent that it is hardly readable anymore...

Privacy engineering explained by an expert

Ian Oliver has many years experience in implementing privacy in software systems. It shows in his recently published book on how to implement privacy in applications and networks. This work expands on the first ever privacy engineering work published earlier in 2014 by Dennedy et al. There is much discussion on web forums about the need to implement privacy in systems, but Oliver has the training and experience to show how such a challenging task can be accomplished. You will need to have at least a basic understanding of software development to appreciate this book. With privacy challenges increasing daily, this book is a great base on which to build. Highly recommended for any privacy related college courses.

Privacy Engineering is a critical must have to complete any engineer, developer or information architect's reading list (along with it's -- differently authored-- prequel, The Privacy Engineer's Manifesto).

Dr. Oliver has both academic AND practical experience building and governing information infrastructures at scale. In Privacy Engineerig, he breaks down some of the complexity to create repeatable and understandable processes.

While this is only a beach read for the truly dedicated information governance professional, Privacy Engineering is a page turner for anyone with the courage to call themselves a privacy professional.

About the Author
In 2000, while a business owner in Dallas, Texas, Chuck Bentley was deeply impacted as a student in a Crown Bible study. The entire direction of his life was changed when he realized that he was attempting to serve two masters, God and money, and failing at both. A practical book that every Christian and all people should read!

I found this book very helpful. It is not only informative but also convicting. Many truths that were shared were written with a fresh insight and with great stories that made it extremely interesting. Chuck Bentley has done a great job making these principles come to life and he drives them home with clarity and Biblical accuracy. I am having our entire church read this book and we are making it our theme for our mid week Bible study. I feel the principles in this book are needed because of the sickness in our culture with a crass desire for materialism. The idea of getting to the root of the matter--our heart is where the battle really lies. This is a great read and it will help all those who read it to develop a Biblical worldview concerning money, wealth, and Christian stewardship. This book has the potential to start a revival in America which is what our country needs!

About the Author
Dr. Brad Long (DMin, Union Theological Seminary) is the Executive Director of Presbyterian Reformed Ministries International (PRMI). In 2000 he founded the Dunamis Fellowship International - a prayer community and seminary designed for equipping believers. Zeb has three children and lives in Black Mountain, North Carolina.

Paul Keith Stokes (MA, Cambridge University) is a minister in the United Reformed Church in the UK serving two churches since 1992. Paul became involved with the PRMI Dunamis Project in November 2001, and served as track director in 2003. Two years later he was appointed as one of three national Directors for the newly-formed Dunamis Fellowship in Britain and Ireland. Paul has two children and lives in Plymouth Devon, England.

Cindy Strickler (MDiv, Princeton Theological Seminary) was ordained in 1986 by the Presbyterian Church in the United States as interim pastor of the Englishtown Presbyterian Church. In 1997 Cindy joined the Board of PRMI and served on the Executive Committee for three years and as President for one. Since 1994 she has been teaching Gateways to Empowered Ministry as well as the Dunamis Projects on Healing, Spiritual Gifts and Spiritual Warfare.

Different from the rest of the field

As I've spent a lot of time looking at books in this vien over the last few years, this one is unique in its approach to church growth.

Instead of programs and strategic planning type stuff, Growing the Church in the Power of the Holy Spirit focuses on how to develop a godly leadership team that learns how to discern and cooperate with the Holy Spirit.

Programs and planning might be the RESULT of cooperating with the Holy Spirit, but that's beyond the scope of the book.

The focus is more on the spiritual development of the leadership to gain the skill of discerning what God might be calling the church to.

Looking at the story of Lazarus, the writers map out an image of the dance of cooperation.

As they look at that story, they unfold the 7 basic dynamics to cooperating with the Holy Spirit and what that might look like in terms of growing your church.

The authors draw from years of personal teaching experience around the world and practical experience in churches to build a beautiful image of cooperating with the Holy Spirit. The principles they outline have been field tested around the world, and several stories from different cultures back it up.

This is not a book of large church vs. small church, country vs. city, or any other type. Rather, this book is focused on helping you discover how to cooperate with the Holy Spirit.

The authors fully believe that the Holy Spirit speaks and gives gifts at the right moment, and the book is full of illustrations of cooperating with the Holy Spirit and expressing those gifts.

Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit

Several years ago I had the opportunity to participate in a large gathering of Christian leaders from across the denominational spectrum. Roman Catholics, Episcopal, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Assembly of God, Baptist, Methodist, Quaker, and non-Denominational.

The question on every leader's mind was "How do we discern the Spirit's leading?" In other words how do we as the Church, discern that the Spirit of the living God is leading His Church rather than denominational polity and endless programs. Have we lost the voice of the Holy Spirit in endless programs and Human Resource policies? As a pastor I worked for a large denomination in the United States. I cannot tell you the times, rather than seeking God in prayer and asking Him how we should respond in certain situations, we immediately contacted the HR department or the denominational handbook. The Church must move from man-centered church-growth techniques and wrestle with the hard fact that Jesus gave only one means of growing His Church. Jesus said, "I will grow my Church" and then later He told the disciples "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes." The growth of the Church is the Lord's and we are called to cooperate with Him. Now, I am by no means against good, godly and Christ-exalting programs whether they be for evangelism, leadership training and equipping, or discipleship but what good are these without the Presence of God in our midst?

The authors recognize the growing absence of the Presence of the Holy Spirit in much of how we make decision as Church. To this end they seek to fill this void by offering a substantial literary contribution in the area of Church growth and spiritual leadership. GROWING THE CHURCH IN THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT is a collaborative work which sees our cooperation with God as a "dance" where the Spirit leads rather than as a technique our best and brightest must develop, patent, package and sell. They offer seven principles to learn in order to become sensitive to a dynamic relationship with God Himself as He leads and we learn to follow. Step by step we CAN become sensitive to the leading of the Spirit of God and follow His desire For His Church.

I have read the book more than once and refer to it regularly. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Does it offer an exhaustive treatment of this timely and vital subject? The answer is "No," but of course no single volume can. It is, however, a valuable contribution which seek to answer the question we asked years ago at the conference. Just "How do we discern the Spirit's leading?" Within the pages of this book an answer unfolds. This volume aims to get the Church of Jesus Christ moving in the right direction. If you are a pastor, a leader in the church or concerned member, and if you struggle with the marketing, the endless denominational red-tape and programmed Christian life, then this book is for you.

Prepare for another addictively spirited adventure in alcoholic archaeology from Master Mixologist, Beachbum Berry!

It's lively seas ahead, ye scurvy bilge-rats! But before extolling the plentiful pleasures of Jeff Berry's new instant-classic, let me drop the piratey parlance and note that his previous exploration on a similar theme - 'Sippin' Safari' - is one of the handful of non-fiction books I have honest-to-God re-read several times (and I don't even have a home BAR!), both for the sheer enjoyment of the writing as well as the colorful collection of people whose lives Berry illuminates with wit and wry perception.

But the other potent component in Jeff's tomes is his remarkable knowledge of history -- both of drinks and the countries and people who engendered them.

And if an award were given for the keenest, most perceptive, and best educated palate on the planet with regard to spirits and the various cocktails they haunt, the honor would go, hands down, to The Beachbum himself. And though he could easily found a university specializing in the study of potable potions and teach all the courses himself, this is all academic, if you'll pardon the pun, in the face of just how much FUN Jeff's books invariably are. And his newest is certainly no exception. In fact, he may well have outdone himself.

But though 'Potions Of The Caribbean' is a formidable achievement in alcoholic archeology, unearthing everything you could possibly want to know about the always fascinating, often violent history of rum and the countless elixirs it has inspired over a huge span of years, I can't help but feel this newest foray into the sweet/sour/strong/weak world of tropical cocktail concoctions is an unofficial sequel, of sorts, to 'Sippin' Safari', or certainly a deeper, wider extension of the groundwork previously laid out in that previous volume.

Both a more ambitious and, overall, intricate book than 'Safari', 'Potions' impressively explores the political, socio-economic and cultural history of the Caribbean as viewed through the distinctive bottom-of-a-bottle lens of Mr. Berry's unique expertise. So this is, ultimately, as much a rich history lesson as it is a rum-soaked adventure and cocktail recipe book - one part sour, two parts sweet, three parts strong and NO parts weak!

But, like its predecessor, 'Potions' is, for me at least, at its most enjoyably intoxicating when spinning colorful yarns about the remarkable people behind the brass rail and the libations they concoct and/or serve. And a particularly colorful biographical gem within this gold mine of tropical mystery, history and mixology is to be found in chapter 6 and concerns the memorable life and career of one "Joe The Bartender" which has to be read to be believed. (I'll say no more -- just buy the book!)

Also of note are the drink recipes in the earlier section of the book in which Berry recreates various historical potions all but lost to time and, in the process, creates for us a kind of tippler's time machine. Though I must admit that -- fascinating as these recreated recipes most assuredly are -- a few of these curiosities might require a tad more courage to sample than I myself happen to possess.

Finally, is it too much to hope for a TRILOGY from this potently potable writer who, though far from a criminal,
has spent a great deal of his life behind bars? Because, as richly extensive as it is, the book breezes by in a beautifully produced, glossily scintillating flash, as the vintage eye-candy illustrations and mouth-watering new drink-porn photos vie for attention with the plentiful and wittily written recipes which accompany them. Yet all of that is icing on a literary cake already rich with an un-put-downable chronicle of the Caribbean and its influences on creative inebriation which equals in wildness anything Captain Jack Sparrow had to contend with in his various piratical screen adventures.

So, Mateys, hoist yer anchors and ready your sea-legs (preferably hollow ones) for a rollicking voyage on Seven Seas worth of tropical cocktails and the compellin' lore behind 'em that ye won't soon be likely to forget! Yo Ho Ho and a Super-Tanker o' Rum!! Aarrrrh!!!

A most amazing cocktail book.

I'm a huge fan of Beachbum Berry, having met him several times at different events. I own all his other cocktail books. I feel his creative force has been instrumental in ensuring tiki drinks keep in the forefront with the cocktail revival happening now. But this book completely blew me away. The graphics, history and recipes are AMAZING! This book will provide hours and hours of perusal. The recipes are fantastically done. I'm just one recipe in - tried the M-1 this week and love it. I think this book will be a bible for any cocktail lover. Thank you Mr. Bum for bringing this into my life!

The definitive tiki guide.

Jeff Berry is the world's foremost authority on all things tiki. Made with fresh, high quality ingredients, the way these drinks were intended to be, the results are amazing. I have all of the Beachbum's books and go back to them time and time again. Full of great history, photos and more- this is a great gift for the cocktail or spirit enthusiast in your life or your favorite bartender. Take a trip back in time to when Polynesia, the Caribbean and the United States all had an amazing moment. Tiki is on its way back in a big way- this book is the soup to nuts primer to fill all of your thirsty needs.
