Advanced space-humans and alien invaders go head-to-head in Tombstone, Arizona, in 1881. (western fans will exclaim, Aha!) Macklin and Doris are descendants of the lost Roanoke colony, some of whom were rescued and taken into space by benevolent aliens of the multispecies Associative. As Monitors, they keep an eye on Earth, but when the predatory alien Kra'agh attack their ship, they crash, separately, on Earth. His memory lost, Macklin wanders into Tombstone, where he finds a room at the boardinghouse of kindly and attractive widow Sarah Nevers. Inevitably, he gets mixed up with the Earp brothers and their allies. Meanwhile, the two ghastly Kra'agh hunters (they can eat terrestrial life-forms and feed on pain and fear) kill some humans, absorb the contents of their brains, disguise themselves with projected illusions, and creep in pursuit. Naturally, they side with the Clanton gang. Doris finally catches up with Macklin and helps him remember what's going on, but his intelligent Companion is damaged and requires rare elements for repair. The Kra'agh, however, have destroyed the Monitors' Moon base and are poised to invade Earth. They try to trap Macklin at the OK Corral, playing their part in the historic shootout, then attack the boardinghouse and grab Sarah. Doris will attempt to rendezvous with an emergency pickup craft, while Macklin follows poor Sarah. First-novelist/actor Boxleitner (the Babylon 5 series, etc.) gives this oft-exploited scenario an organized, crisply delivered, and well-informed workout. About the Author
A native Midwesterner, Bruce Boxleitner received his formal acting training on the stage. He is an alumnus of Chicago's prestigious Goodman Theater. His first television appearance was a five-line part in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Since then, he has worked steadily in television, frequently in Westerns, and became known for his starring role in the popular series "Scarecrow and Mrs. King." In 1994, he assumed the role of Captain John Sheridan in the wildly popular science fiction series, "Babylon 5."

A Very Good Read

A local bookseller recommended this novel. Science fiction and the wild West? Talk about original! Very surprised at how good it is and am now reading the followup "Searcher" book. Wish the author would have continued the series, as he is a very imaginative writer.

Not just for die-hard Boxleitner fans!

The man really did it! This first novel gives us a taste of Harry Turtledove, with a dash of Stephen King, and a healthy dose of Mr. Boxleitner's wit, charm and experienced actor's sense of story. It is definitely a first novel AND a setup for a sequel so the exposition is sometimes too lengthy, in moments even diluting the suspense, BUT when it revs up, it really revs up and is well worth the read--looking forward to more from such a creative storyteller!

Western science fiction - an interesting blend

I picked this one up because it's no secret that Bruce Boxleitner is a fan and reader of science fiction and a history buff. I thought it would be interesting to see how he managed to combine the two in this tale purporting to be first contact with aliens in 1881 in the Old West
The protagonist is Monitor Macklin, a human being from stock that came originally from Earth, and sent to Earth to keep us safe from the predator aliens. There's a couple problems, though: the predator Kra'augh are already here, getting ready to move in, strip-mine the planet and enjoy hunting the Food -- us. And Macklin's ship crash-landed and he's lost a chunk of his memory. His AI implant is working hard to feed him data, but his head injury is making it hard to get through. To make it more interesting, Macklin arrives in Tombstone shortly before the OK Corral shootout (and if you don't know what this is, go watch Tombstone).
The story focuses on Macklin trying to figure out why he's here and who he is and why he knows what horses and saddles are, but has obviously never ridden. Meanwwhile, Monitor Doreen, Macklin's partner and lover, who did land safely (they were both dodging the predator ships when they landed), is busy looking for him. Concurrent with that, two predator scouts are on the move, killing some Food (and pleased with the sport can give) and trying to find the Monitors so they can't send for help.
It's competently written, if a little clumsy sometimes. Nothing fancy in the structure, just the linear storyline ad a few memory flashes of the past from Macklin. I'd guess that Boxleitner is a man with a story to tell, and has chosen to tell it more like a western than sf. I think the humorous side of the Monitors and aliens (who can take on the appearance of Food they have absorbed, but still smell and act strange) trying to fit into the "wild west," is not a well-developed as it could be. It's the beginning of a series. Not all the questions get answered, not all the problems solved. I am, however, interested enough to read the next one.

Witty and clear

As far as economics textbooks go, this one is very readable. Its treatment of the subject is clear and reasonably rigorous on the undergraduate level. The author is also quite witty.

Disappointing

I bought this book because it was the required text for the Open Yale Course on Game Theory. I did not think it was well written and is not easy to follow. Chapter 3's Terminology and Notation section is especially bad. The organization of the book's chapters don't seem to have any rhyme or reason, with some chapters being only two pages long. This came as a surprise to me after reading the reviews for this book. There are no answers in the book for the exercises so you can't be sure if you have correctly understood the lesson. They said that guided exercises were added, but they are really part of the lesson and there is no way you can practice or test yourself with the single guided exercise. What is most glaring is that the book doesn't even mention Evolutionary Stable Strategies. How can a text on Strategy ignore that completely? The only saving grace is that the examples are more realistic than the Open Yale Course, but who cares as long as you learn the lesson. I would not have bought the book and would have stuck with the Open Yale videos alone if I had known.

I found this book well worth my money. It's quite accessible and has great examples. I like the guided problem sets. I just wish the exercises had an answer key. They're great practice.

About the Author
Jeannine Parvati Baker was an international teacher of midwifery and presented this work at conferences around the world. She has presented at every Intl. Congress on Pre and Perinatal Psychology and Health in the USA. She has keynoted at many Women, Midwifery, Education and Herbal / Health Conferences, including her home state -- Utah Midwives Association -- and in Australia and Europe. Jeannine has been speaking on behalf of the Possible Family since 1970 in countless public forums, including the Utah State Congress and Rainbow Gatherings, to cite some extremes. In 1993, JP was nominated for Woman of the Year Award for Contributions to Medicine by WHO'S WHO of Cambridge, England, in whose books, her contributions to scientific as well as lay publications, are listed. The author says, "This book grew out of our need to be healthy and re-own the powers of naturally healing ourselves". Contains three indices, a glossary of mythological, feminist and gynecological terms, and blank pages in the back for notetaking. There are also herbal lists for emenogogues, infertility, temporary and permanant sterility, anaphrodesiacs, aphrodesiacs, reproductive organs and your cycle, pregnancy, childbirth and lactation. here's a short synopsis.... chapter #1 - "on the rag" and other menstrual rituals (contains pattern for making your own menstral pads) #2 - fertility #3 - herbal birth control #4 - anaphrodesiacs #5 - aphrodesiacs #6 - herbs for the mind #7 - self health - what's the matter, coming off the pill #8 - balancers and toners (herbs for the cycle and reproductive organs) #9 - pregnancy, childbirth, lactation (plus placenta recipes, celestial influences) #10 - menopause: the change
This is a very comprehensive, useful, and entertaining book. I like to just open it up at random and read a chapter. Or, when I want specific advise, I can just look in the index and turn to whatever pages fit. I find I get so engrossed, though, that I just can't stop! I especially like the letters from women and the dream interpretations"

magical spiritual journey into the many layers of womanhood

When I got pregnant a couple of years ago, from the moment of conception until miscarriage, I was beset with horrendous morning sickness. I couldn't get out of bed those first few days except on my hands and knees. I was often too dizzy to even stand up. I didn't know if I would make it to the bathroom before vomiting. As a result, I began keeping a plastic bucket in my bedroom. I also decided it was time to figure out how to squash my queasiness so I could get on with the important task of getting to work on time everyday.
I was living with my sister then, and she had a copy of Jeannine Parvati's Hygieia on her shelves. On day three, I made a beeline for it. Inside this beautiful off-size book were hand lettered pages, original artwork, and personal testimonies of herbal efficacy in promoting women's health at every stage of the life cycle. What a relief it was to find this information so close as hand, especially after my early dissatisfaction with my M.D.'s suggestions.
Parvati has particular interests in menstruation, contraception, fertility, sterility, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause; she is the mother of five children at my last count. Parvati urges women to be in touch with their own inner cycles and to trust our relationship with the moon for guidance. Parvati includes myths, stories, and recipes. Reading this book was like remembering knowledge I used to have but couldn't quite dredge into consciousness. Of course, ginger for nausea. Of course, mint. As a result I began to keep a thermos full of herbal tea next to the bed so I cold drink it first thing in the morning.
Parvati takes the reader well beyond these common herbs into the realm of herbal abortions. But, as Parvati wisely advises, "Herbal abortions are not necessarily any easier than a technological one-in fact sometimes they are more difficult. . . . But let us not use these herbs like pills; use herbs always as tools to understanding ourselves. Meditating on the mythology of the herbal emmenagogue while you use the plant will bring you closer to the spirit of healing (p.19)." It is precisely this spirit of healing that makes Parvati's book so indispensable to me.
While this book might be a bit difficult for beginners to grasp, the effort is well worth it. Hygieia is one of the most important guides to women's health that I own.

Fills a void on herbal healing....

When HYGIEIA-A WOMAN'S HERBAL by Jeannine Parvati was first published in July 1978, it filled a void. Much of what she had to say needed to be said. If you're interested in historical artifacts (how dumb we were), this book is a good read. I believe much of Parvati's text will interest most contemporary women-at least women who have difficult questions and want to know more about the female body. Two decades ago, many of us fit that description as most medical research was conducted with male subjects. Most of what affected the female body was not discussed in public or even in books. In spite of their notoriety, Master's and Johnson didn't cover this stuff and I doubt Dr. Ruth did either. Imagine your deepest secrets about your body, those things you might not be able to discuss with your best girl friend without difficulty. Well, Parvati is the girlfriend you never had.
Much of Parvati's material is geared to younger woman-probably because she was younger when she wrote the book and authors tend to write about their experience, but she does have some good stuff on menopause. Given the outpouring of books on the topic of herbal healing in recent years, you might wonder what this book covers not found in other herbal volumes, and the answer is plenty. Parvati's book is about herb uses and the reproductive organs of the female body. Parvati organizes the herbs by topics, covering subjects such as aphrodisiacs to whet the sexual appetite, as well as herbs to improve fertility, assist with birth control, boost lactation, ease menstruation, et cetera. She has lots of graphic illustrations and pictures (naked bodies) and discusses herbal applications you probably won't find discussed anywhere else.
Parvati is Native American with a few other good qualities thrown in such as six children conceived and delivered a la natural. This is a book for liberated women (and men) or those who want to be.

Good story once you get accustomed to the dialect...

This is, hands down, the most unusual book I've read this year. Moni Mohsin is a Pakistani novelist who currently lives in London. This is her American debut novel, and the entire book is written in what I think is a Pakistani/English dialect. If you can get used to the dialect, you may enjoy the story.

The heroine is an unnamed Pakistani woman of the wealthier class, with husband Janoo and young son Kulchoo. Her aunt demands that she help find a wife for her cousin Jonkers, but she isn't thrilled about it. Her biggest concerns are her beloved son Kulchoo, her social standing, and her expensive clothes, makeup, and lifestyle. Her marriage to Janoo is obviously in trouble. And on top of all that, there are bombs dropping around her and terrorist attacks to deal with. The last straw is when Jonkers decides that he might want to pick his OWN bride instead of an arranged marriage.

At first, our unnamed narrator is quite shallow, but she shows some good character development as the story progresses. And she can be clever and funny. I think there is a lot of humor here. The other characters are colorful, and overall it's an entertaining story. This has been compared to Jane Austen's Emma, but I disagree. Both ladies tried to be match makers, but the similarity ends there, in my opinion. I have never read a novel set in Pakistan before, and I enjoyed the glimpse of what life might be like for a woman in the upper classes of that country.

But back to the dialect. You really need to get used to the dialect in order to enjoy the story. Some readers will not be able to get past it. I had a hard time reading the first few chapters. In nearly every paragraph you will find wrong spelling, incorrect grammar, and Pakistani words thrown in. (Oh, yeah, and the narrator can also be politically incorrect at times.)

Let me give you some sample sentences, so you can judge for yourself:

"You know Jonkers, na? He's my Aunty Pussy's one and only child. Her sun and air."
"But I have very good sick-sense like that."
"They lost some when Musharraf's guvmunt did its little a countability drama in the begining."
"Good radiance, I thought. Last month, thanks God, die-vorce came through."

After a few chapters, I did get used to the writing, and I enjoyed the plot. I would recommend this book to readers who don't mind lots of dialect, are interested in Pakistan, or who simply want to read something unusual by a new novelist.

Lahore High-Society through the eyes of a social butterfly

"Duty Free" (originally released as "Tender Hooks") is a worthy follow-up to Moni Mohsin's "Diary of a Social Butterfly". This novel continues to follow our heroine from get-together (GT) to kitty party to wedding in her quest to find a suitable bride for her cousin(rich-rich, fair-fair, and no worries with Jonkers' divorce from his trashy secretary). She must find a bride before the middle of December, or else something might happen to her son (Butterfly believes that Jonkers' mum, Pussy, has cursed Butterfly's son if the bride is not found).

While all this bride hunting is going on, Pakistan is falling further into disarray. Beardo-weirdos (fundamentalists) are blowing up offices, trains, schools, and cars; backstabbing frenemies are working against Butterfly's matrimonial mission; and her marriage is slowly degenerating into nothingness. Our heroine does get a wake up call or two-about the political and social situation in her country (it cannot be ignored or swept under the rug), and about her marriage (it takes two to make a marriage work).

Some of the previous reviewers have had a problem with Butterfly's malapropisms and language usage. I know people like Butterfly, and have received letters from them and they are very like what is in this book. Yes, Moni Mohsin goes a little over the top with this device, but it fits the character, who is also over the top and larger than life.

Between you, me and the four walls...

I love to read new versions of Jane Austen novels and have to say that I was excited to start reading `Duty Free' by Moni Moshin for I thought with a setting such a modern day Lahore it has to have so much potential for fun and intrigue. The story was hard for me to get into, not that I didn't find it interesting but it was the language the author used that made it a very difficult read. I understand that the feel of the novel was to create a 2nd English language feel with words like "baggrounds" but it lost its feel for me when I was reading because I wanted to correct the language over and over again. Putting the language aside, the writing style is simple and flows but the story did have a journal or diary type feel when reading and I found it to be exhausting when the main character is nothing like our Emma but is much more self-centered and money oriented women. The story had some funny antidotes and some memorable characters, but I found it predicable and overall the language just so very trying on my nerves... as Mrs. Bennet would say. (Another Jane Austen reference) Before coming to the end and having some of my hopes redeemed by the way the author tied everything together, I was secretly hoping that Janoo, the unnamed heroine's husband, might just decide that he has had enough of his wife and take their son and leave all this drama behind. It pains me to be so honest in my review, but I just honestly could not get into this novel not even for all the kitties in the world.
