Many strengths, but also serious flaws

Since I will be traveling in Germany this summer, I purchased this book to refresh the German I learned in high school many years ago. The book is a really thorough overview of German and German grammar. (My native-speaking tutor thinks it is too heavy on the grammar.) It needs to be supplemented with some type of interactive practice.

But that is not my complaint. I can only describe the editing as sloppy. The book is full of errors--errors that will badly confuse the student of German. Several examples (all of which have been verified by my tutor):

1. Page 81. A number of the verb endings in the conjugation of "sehen" are wrong. "siehst" is given as the 3rd person singular, when it should be "sieht"

2. Page 83. The note at the end of the conjugation of "werden" states that when the stem ends in d or t, an extra e is added to the stem third person singular. That would imply "es wirdet". But the conjugation shows "es wird". How is the poor student to know that "werden" is an exception to the rule just given??? ("es wird" is correct).

3. Page 93. There is a table giving the declension of personal pronouns. One of the columns is misaligned under the wrong column header, and two rows are switched.

I could go on, but you get the point.

Also, the book badly needs an expanded table of contents and/or an index. For one example, there are lots of very interesting and useful explanations and examples of idiomatic usage scattered through the book, and flagged by images of push pins (that's the good part). But if you remember having seen one and want to go back to review it, there is no way to find it other than a page-by-page search of the book. Frustrating, to say the least.

All in all, I think the book was well-conceived, and well organized and presented in many ways. But it looks like it was rushed into print, with too many editing shortcuts taken.

Perfect for the absolute beginner

I purchased this book after struggling with some other German books that just seemed to be moving along too fast. This book is PERFECT for an absolute beginner who wants to go slowly with lots of examples and written exercises to do. Pair this with Mr. Swick's "Complete German Grammar" and you are set.

The only downside is that there is no CD for pronunciation--but if like me you've already tried another book, it probably came with a CD and you can use the pronunciation help from that one.

good introduction to German

This is a very enjoyable book to learn German. There are a number of books in this series, including French, Spanish, and Italian. The only problem is it doesn't have a glossary. You need to buy a dictionary in the language. (I recommend a Larousse!)

About the Author
Richard A. Davis Jr is Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of South Florida. He has spent the past 40 years studying coasts throughout the world. He specializes in beach/inlet/barrier island morphodynamics and Holocene history of coasts. Dr Davis is the author/editor of twelve previous volumes, most of which are on coastal topics.

Duncan M. FitzGerald is an Associate Professor in the Earth Science Department at Boston University. During the past 25 years he has studied the morphodynamics and hydraulics of tidal inlets, the stratigraphy and evolution of barrier systems, and sediment transport in estuaries. This research has taken him to coasts throughout the world resulting in numerous professional publications.

This was a class requirement. The book is hardcover and the content well organized and well illustrated.
It is recommended if your class needs it. However, collegue level books must do something about their pricing.
Why is it that the most expensive books are designed for an audience that can barely pay for it?

This book is an excellent reference for importing. However if you, like me, are starting a very small importing business I would recommend a different book. This book is geared a lot more towards major importing.

This supplement is designed to be used as a companion to the main textbook, Modern Control Systems by Richard C. Dorf and Robert H. Bishop. The primary objective of this supplement is to strengthen the design emphasis by introducing a selected set of solved design problems. Each chapter focuses on one design problem adapted from Modern Control Systems. The problems are selected from a wide range of fields. In addition to the design problems, some chapters also include example problems that illustrate important points and concepts. Rather than focus just on the design issues of specific (and interesting) design problems, this supplement is built around the notion of a design process.

Design is the process of conceiving or inventing the forms, parts, and details of a system to achieve a reasoned purpose. Control system design is only one important example of design. Design is a creative endeavor, so there is not a unique methodology that guarantees a valid design solution. To help organize the design process, we suggest a series of steps leading to the final design. Every chapter addresses at least one step of the design process. In general, the early chapters focus on modeling, design specifications, and identification of important variables to be to controlled. The later chapters focus on controller selection and design and analysis of the controlled system. Of course the design process is inherently iterative, so some steps will be repeated as the design is refined. MATLAB and SIMULINK are valuable tools in the design process because they effectively assist in performing the repetitive steps quickly.

Now that powerful computers and software are available for control system design, some may ask the question, Why don't we program the full higher-order nonlinear equations, ignore all the modeling and analysis techniques, and use the computer to grind out an answer? There are many reasons why this is not a good way to solve an engineering problem. First, we do not get a feel for the problem. For example, suppose the team leader tells us the design specifications have been changed for the problem we are currently working. Which controller gain changes to meet the new design specifications? Do we need to change the controller structure? Without a feel for the problem, we may have few ideas on how to proceed. In this supplement we present the technique of obtaining approximate transfer function models to determine initial controller designs and then relying on MATLAB to fine-tune and analyze the closed-loop control system. In this manner, we can develop good engineering intuition regarding the design variables and how they affect the system response.

In this book we also use the notion of dominant poles to obtain initial control system designs. The idea is that we design the controller such that the closed-loop system response is dominated by certain poles placed appropriately to meet the design specifications. Again, we can use MATLAB to verify quickly that the design specifications have indeed been satisfied. Each time we use MATLAB in a problem solution in this supplement, we give the associated script. We can use the scripts to verify the results, but more importantly, they can be modified to solve other similar design problems.

To properly utilize this supplement it is essential to have access to Modern Control Systems. Many of the problems and examples in Dorf and Bishop are solved here using MATLAB and SIMULINK, but the background information presented in Modern Control Systems has not been repeated. For example, it is assumed that the reader is familiar with MATLAB. The main text Modern Control Systems contains relevant materials for new users of MATLAB and that material is not presented again in this supplement. Organization

Each chapter of the supplement follows the corresponding chapter in Modern Control Systems. To allow the reader to relate the supplement chapters to the main textbook chapters, the chapter titles have remained the same. The Software

It is assumed that the readers have access to MATLAB and the Control System Toolbox. All of the MATLAB examples in this supplement were developed and tested on a Power Macintosh 7200/90 with MATLAB Version 4.2c and the Control System Toolbox. Since it is not possible to verify each example on all the available computer platforms that are compatible with MATLAB, we restrict the computer topics covered in this supplement to those that are platform independent. It will be very helpful to have access to the MATLAB Users Guide. Readers do not need access to SIMULINK to use this supplement effectively. Every design problem is solved using MATLAB, so skip the SIMULINK material if desired. It is clear, however, that SIMULINK provides valuable additional simulation capability; therefore, we introduce it in this supplement for those readers wishing to extend their knowledge base. We used SIMULINK 1.3c in the simulation development. It will be very helpful to also have access to the SIMULINK Users Guide.

Easy to read, use as a control systems review.

This is a companion to "Modern Control Systems" by Dorf & Bishop. Much of the text of this book refers back to the "parent" text, and as such some sections of this text seem somewhat "incomplete". Easy to read, good as a stand-alone review of control systems. Not much on "modern control" (most of the book covers classical control). Not a whole lot of Simulink content, mainly Matlab functions used for specific topics. Good example systems.

About the Author

Michael P. Nichols is a professor at the College of William and Mary. Dr. Nichols received his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin, and his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester. He teaches and practices family therapy, and is the author of numerous journal articles and books, including Inside Family Therapy, The Lost Art of Listening, Stop Arguing with Your Kids, and Essentials of Family Therapy. He is co-author, along with Salvador Minuchin and Wai-Yung Lee, of the newly published Assessing Families and Couples: From Symptom to System.

HIGHLY ENGAGING for 5th graders

My students LOVE these- they are 5th graders and some of them are really low readers but STILL are reading these books and COMPREHENDING them!!! I can't believe how lucky I was to find these books.
The books are high interest for both boy and girls (another shocking fact, it is VERY rare to find a book that interests my boys these days and even rarer to find one that both the boys and girls like!)

Don't get scared away but the # of pages or the fact that they are high level readers- these are GREAT books for probably any students who is reading at 3rd grade and up.

These are a GREAT series also if you do accelerated reader at your school, my students are reading and passing the AR tests on these despite the fact that they are higher reading levels than they are "supposed" to read!

This is a dream come true series, nothing can compare except Diary of a Wimpy Kid!

Great for reluctant readers.

Although my 11 yr old son is a good reader, I have a hard time getting him to sit down and read chapter books/novels, but he loves these books. He gets through them quite quickly (a couple of sittings) because there are graphics on each page. They are similiar to Big Nate books, which he also likes. He might need to read several of these to get in enough reading time for school, but as long as he's reading, I don't really care if it's a long complicated book or something fun and enjoyable for him. If you have a "reluctant" reader, give these a try.
